Pennsylvania Department of Education Certification

Students will be recommended to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) for Instructional I teacher certification when they have completed all degree or certification requirements and passed all portions of the Praxis examinations required by the PDE. In addition, students are required by the PDE to have completed the following academic requirements in their undergraduate coursework: one course in English or American literature; one course in writing; one standard, college-level math course; and a second math-intensive course (which could be another standard math course, or a math-intensive course, such as micro- or macro-economics or probability/statistics). Applicants for provisional instructional I certification in secondary education choose a content area in which to teach (e.g., English, math, social studies, etc.). PDE requires the equivalent of an undergraduate major in the content area as a prerequisite to entry into the secondary teacher education program. Prospective students may submit their undergraduate transcripts to the Penn GSE teacher education program to have them reviewed for pre-requisite courses. PDE maintains criteria for certification related to U.S. citizenship as well. Further information on certification may be obtained from the website of the Pennsylvania Department of Education:
