Undergraduate Urban Education Minor

 

Urban Education Minor: Elementary Education

The elementary education concentration is for students preparing to be elementary or middle school teachers, and students interested in the teaching and learning of adolescents--this program can lead to certification with an additional course, which includes full time student teaching, typically taken in a 9th semester.

Required coursework: 7 course units

4. EDUC 245 – Science and Social Studies in Elementary and Middle Schools – includes fieldwork (Academically Based Community Service course, or ABCS)

5. EDUC 531 – Mathematics in the Elementary and Middle Schools – includes 2 half-days in the field

6. EDUC 520 – Literacy in Elementary Schools – includes 3 half-days in the field

7. Urban Education Minor Capstone – a problem-based or theory-based research project, typically taken in the final semester of coursework, that students can complete in the context of an ABCS course, a senior thesis course, or an independent study.

EDUC 422 – Supervised Student Teaching  This course, requiring 5 days a week in supervised student teaching in a classroom, with seminar, is typically taken in the ninth semester (following graduation). It is required for faculty recommendation for instructional I certification awarded by the Pennsylvania Dept. of Education.

Urban Education Minor: Secondary Education

The secondary education concentration is for students preparing to be secondary teachers of English, social studies, science, math or foreign language and students interested in the teaching and learning of adolescents--this program can lead to certification with an additional course, which includes full time student teaching, typically taken in a 9th semester.

4. Content Area (Academically Based Community Service course, or ABCS):
Secondary teachers often need to teach content beyond the scope of a traditional single academic major. For instance, an English major might choose to take a course in Shakespeare or linguistics; a history major planning to teach social studies might choose a geography, sociology, economics, or anthropology courses, or a chemistry major might choose a course in another science such as geology or earth sciences.
Either course #3 or 4 must be an ABCS course.

(if pursuing social studies, sciences, or math certification)

(if pursuing English certification)

The Policy, Research, & Practice concentration is for students interested in planning and policy work in urban education (without certification) – and for students preparing to submatriculate into the elementary or secondary master’s/certification program at Penn GSE.
